It won't hold together much longer without some changes
Victor Davis Hanson - The Glue Holding America Together
Sad but true. We have lost much of what made America great. We are now just coasting on the tremendous inertia generated by the greatest society ever to grace the Earth. It took a long time and the correct cultural, philosophical and moral foundation to create that greatness. That foundation has been eroded and is crumbling but the edifice still stands. It will not last forever. At some point the weight of our decaying culture will bring down what better men created. To stave off this collapse we need to fundamentally change our society. I don't know if it can be done, but I would like to think that we can turn the tide.
Demographics and the destruction of the American culture
I used to read about the fall of the Roman Empire in an historic context. It was dates, events, names, demographic trends and military campaigns. I never internalized it. It was all in the abstract; something to memorize not feel. Now I see the decline of America, closely paralleling the fall of Rome and I finally get it. I have the benefit of two thousand years of history to guide my understanding of current events. This same scenario has played out many times over the past two millennia. All the signs are there for anybody to see. Unfortunately, most in our society are either too apathetic or distracted by trivialities to see what is happening. Were there citizens of Rome who saw the demise of their empire in progress and shouted to their oblivious neighbors? We have the benefit of history to warn us, but nobody seems to be interested. I feel a tremendous sense of frustration, anger and sadness knowing that we are careening towards societal collapse and the dustbin of history, yet the majority in this country can't look beyond the shallow confines of their daily lives to recognize the danger. So now I look around and see what is happening to America and I think I know what it must have felt like to be a Roman sometime around 300 AD.
