All the nations of the world throughout history haven't amassed as much debt as the United States
Unfunded liabilities dwarf the national debt
20FEB13
Forget the budget deficit ($1.2T/yr.) and the national debt ($16.5T); what about the $123,000,000,000,000 in unfunded liabilities that this nation has? We have idiots in both parties who are quibbling over $45B in annual cuts (just cuts in the rate of growth.....the budget will not actually be cut) over the next ten years. Obama's sequester deal, that he demanded in August of 2011, is minuscule in comparison to what we borrow every year. It is an even smaller percentage of what we spend every year. Compared to our unfunded liabilities it is but a rounding error; not even worthy of mention. We must make significant and drastic cuts to the entitlement programs, discretionary spending and government pay and benefits if we are to prevent catastrophic financial collapse. We have a hundred years of politicians promising benefits that could not be paid for in order to buy votes. We don't have one hundred years to fix this problem. We have only a couple years in which to make drastic changes, or it will be too late. Unfortunately, all the Democrats and many Republicans continue to conduct business as usual, as if there is not a problem. These people are criminals; stealing from the future for their benefit. For generations, politicians have amassed personal wealth and power while in office. They bought votes with promises of benefits that could not possibly be sustained indefinitely. These politicians felt secure in their actions as they were ransacking the wealthiest nation in human history and were sure that they would not be in office when the bill came due. Well, here we are; time to pay the piper. The money has run out and soon we will not be able to borrow any more. When that happens these politicians will finally have to face the day of reckoning for their criminal actions. They probably won't do the responsible thing and make the necessary cuts to maintain some semblance of normal American life. More likely they will just keep printing money, hoping that the resulting hyperinflation will enable the debt to be paid off with our newly worthless currency. Just look at where this has been tried throughout the third world. And that's what we will become; a third world nation. Thanks to our lack of fiscal discipline we will also take the rest of the world's economies down with us. Will there be civil unrest? That's a nice way to describe it. It won't be pretty. We have raised generations of people who have come to expect the government to provide for them. They probably will react just as the citizens of Greece are responding to their suddenly having to face fiscal realities. There is no such thing as a free lunch and if the government has been providing free lunches for 80 years and then suddenly stops providing those lunches, there will be lots of angry, hungry people in the streets.
GAO: Obama's policies unsustainable
Dangerous times ahead, but nobody is doing anything. This is a failure of our elected leaders and our news media. The politicians continue to buy votes with money they don't have and the news media refuses to report that crime. This is massive theft against the citizens and all future generations of Americans. These politicians are stealing the promise of American prosperity from our future to buy their offices. These people need to be held accountable. They should be in jail, but at the very least, could you stop re-electing them?
Pigford - Just another example of politicians spending billions to buy votes
This scandal has been growing for years and the mainstream media has deliberately ignored it. The Obama Administration is not complying with a court order, it is using a court order as an excuse to spend billions to buy votes.
Where our taxes are going
This is what is fundamentally wrong with our government. The IRS can't see the blatant fraud and illegality indicated by twenty four thousand refunds valued at over $46M going to one address, yet when they want to attack Obama's political enemies they become quite efficient. The NSA is collecting information on virtually all electronic communications in the country, yet the FBI can't prevent a couple of idiot jihadis from bombing the Boston Marathon even though the Russians had given them plenty of advanced warning. The Army spends billions in wars to kill jihadis, yet promotes a jihadi within its ranks and ignores all the obvious clues right up to the point where he jumps up on a table and starts killing American soldiers while screaming Allahu akbar. Government has become this enormous, all-powerful juggernaut that intrudes on every aspect of our lives, but it doesn't do what the citizens expect it to do; it just does what it needs to do to maintain itself and keep itself in power. This is no longer government of the people, by the people and for the people. Nobody cares that $46M in refunds to obvious identity thieves goes to one address. Just so long as the machine of government continues to run all the bureaucrats are fat, dumb and happy.
