Nothing like a little blatant corruption to go along with pissing away a half billion dollars.
LAUSD uses $500M in construction funds for Ipads
This is just one example of countless acts of corruption, mismanagement and cronyism that happen every day in federal, state and local politics. The LAUSD, which perpetually claims to need more money 'for the children' is going to waste a half billion dollars on a program to give tablet computers to all students. Now some people will say that is a noble goal that will help prepare today's youth for the technological challenges of tomorrow (See-I can talk like a politician). I call BS. LAUSD is going to spend $500M in 'construction funds' that will be repaid over twenty years on what is essentially a consumable product. It is one thing to spend that much money on capital improvements or durable goods, but computers are now consumables. You couldn't even justify spending half a billion dollars over twenty years on something like vehicles. We all know that vehicles in continuous use have a very short lifespan. How can you possibly justify spending that much money on tablet computers? Given the lifespan of computer operating systems and hardware, expecting to even get five years of use out of a computer would be wildly optimistic. Since these are going to be issued to LAUSD students who have only a 50% graduation rate, many of whom live in high crime areas and who often don't take care of the buildings and books they currently use, it is insane to spend this much money on items that will so quickly be stolen, destroyed or rendered obsolete. What will the LAUSD do in three or four years when all those tablets are broken, lost or stolen and they are still paying for them for the next 16 years? If I know the mind of liberal bureaucrats and legislators, they will borrow more money from future generations to pay for the unneeded and ill-advised project. Politicians and bureaucrats that spend more money than they have available are committing all of us to unsustainable, ruinous debt. We need to enforce fiscal responsibility on all levels of government. That means getting involved in politics and removing people from office when they misbehave. Apathy is what has caused the mess we find ourselves in today. It is naive and dangerous to give politicians the power to spend billions of dollars and expect that they will always do the right thing. If we don't pay attention to what they do and hold them to account, we are doomed to suffer the type of corruption and mismanagement we see throughout government today. The City of Bell was raped and plundered by city officials because the citizens of that city didn't care enough to keep track of what they were doing. Los Angeles is no different. The same goes for the county, state and federal governments. We just re-elected a president who campaigned in 2008 on cutting the national debt, yet, when elected, added more to the debt than all the previous presidents combined. Informed voters would not re-elect somebody who committed such acts of fiscal destruction. Much of that is due to a partisan media that is doing everything possible to keep the truth from the people, but it is also a result of apathy. If you did even a minimal amount of research you would have known exactly what an Obama presidency would do to this country. Ignorance and apathy will destroy our country. Everybody must take an active role in our politics to avoid that fate.
Update
Hundreds of school iPads hacked. LAUSD calls for students to turn them in
It's a good thing that LAUSD has that huge budget surplus to absorb billion dollar mistakes like this. Ooooooohhh, right. They have a little bit of a cash flow problem, don't they? I bet they gave some IT security company with ties to the school board a $10M no-bid contract to come up with this foolproof security system.
I'm just going to put it out there right now; Within a year over 50% of these iPads will be lost, stolen or broken. And that's probably a conservative estimate. I also say that 90% of the remaining serviceable iPads will be used for non-school-related activities at least 75% of the time.
Good job liberals. You destroyed the education system that used to be the envy of the world.
LAUSD calls back iPads. Only 2/3 returned. Billion dollar program in question
The program called for all iPads to be kept at school. When the LAUSD demanded that students return them only 2/3 did so. Where are the rest? Lost? Stolen? Sold for drugs? This BILLION DOLLAR BOONDOGGLE was doomed from the moment it first crawled out of the soft, fuzzy head of a liberal educator. The school district that only graduates little over half of its students just wasted a billion dollars.
