This is the type of adversity average young Americans faced on this day 69 years ago.
Young men in their late teens and early twenties were asked to do extraordinary things on a regular basis. We asked a lot from them and expected them to rise to the occasion. They did.
There is a lesson to be learned here. We have lowered expectations for our children. They are coddled and pampered; not challenged to rise to the limits of their abilities. We think we are protecting them, but, in fact, we are consigning them to lives of mediocrity.
